    • An unusual and boldly geometric Victorian bloodstone signet ring, fully hallmarked for 18K gold, Birmingham, 1882. The ring is the work of W&H, likely the Birmingham-based jewellers White & Hawkins.

At the centre sits a striking hexagonal plaque of bloodstone - also known as heliotrope - a dark green chalcedony flecked with vivid red inclusions of iron oxide. This material was traditionally associated with protection, courage, and healing, and was a favoured choice for men’s signet rings and fobs in the Georgian and Victorian periods.

The gemstone measures 15mm x 9mm, and is neatly rub-over set in a heavy gold mount with flared shoulders. The signet face is raised and sharply faceted, creating a clean modern silhouette that belies its 19th-century origin. The band itself is substantial, measuring 6mm wide and retaining crisp parallel grooves near the shoulder, a subtle nod to the neoclassical tastes of the mid-Victorian era.

The ring bears a full English hallmark suite for Birmingham 1882, including the maker’s mark W&H, crown for gold, ‘18’ for 18 carat, Birmingham anchor, and the date letter.

      Stone: Bloodstone (15mm x 9mm)
Ring Size: UK S½ / US 9.25
      Band Width: 6mm
      Weight: 7.27g
Condition: Very good antique condition. Minor evidence of historic resizing, otherwise excellent.

This ring’s precise geometry and clean setting lend it an unexpectedly modernist feel - an excellent example of Victorian craftsmanship ahead of its time.
