    • A 19th-century amulet from Bavaria or the Alpine region: a bird-of-prey claw, probably a buzzard's, capped in silver.

In the hunting culture of Bavaria and Austria, men wore a charivari: a heavy silver chain hung across the front of their lederhosen or waistcoat as part of traditional Tracht. It was hung with trophies and talismans such as stag's teeth, claws, coins and carved charms, each a record of the hunt or a token of protection. A charivari was built up over a lifetime and often passed down through the family.

Claws of birds of prey were especially valued, thought to lend the wearer the bird's keen sight and strength and to ward off harm. This example is complete and well proportioned, the claw intact and the silver cap simply made.

The silver has developed a soft patina, which can be polished away if preferred.

Wear it alone on a chain, or add it to a charm collection.

Details: 19th century; Bavaria or the Alps; silver; bird-of-prey claw; 3.4 cm tall (without jump ring) × 2.8 cm wide; 2.39g.

Condition: Excellent. The claw is intact.
