    • An antique gold and sapphire ring, dating to around 1890, set with a natural sapphire of approximately 1ct. The stone has a dark royal-blue face, with attractive colour zoning visible from certain angles; the back of the sapphire shows paler blue areas, while the face presents as a much deeper, richer tone. This gives the stone a distinctive character, shifting between inky blue and brighter flashes as it moves in the light.

The mount is crafted in 14K gold, with split openwork shoulders and a solid, tapering shank. It is struck with the French coquille Saint-Jacques, or scallop shell, hallmark, used for 14K gold / 585 fineness; this suggests a Continental piece, possibly German or Austrian, later assayed or retailed for the French market. The scallop shell is recorded as the French hallmark for 14-carat gold.

The ring weighs 5.5g and is a UK size J / US 4.75. Condition is very good, with light surface wear to the gold consistent with age and a secure setting. A handsome antique natural sapphire ring, with a strong late 19th-century profile and an unusually characterful blue sapphire.
