An impressive pair of antique Iberian ‘pendeloque’ earrings, dating from around 1800. These striking earrings are a fine example of late 18th to early 19th century Spanish carriage jewellery—precious-looking pieces made from less valuable materials such as pinchbeck and coloured glass, intended for wear during travel to deter theft.
Designed in the distinctive two-part pendeloque form, these earrings reflect the stylistic shift away from the girandole in favour of vertical drop designs. This evolution was likely influenced by the towering hairstyles of the late 18th century, which required jewellery with greater visual height for balance and proportion.
Each earring features an openwork repoussé metal design with both silver- and gold-toned finishes, centred with vibrant emerald-green glass stones measuring approximately 4 mm in diameter. The geometric bezels and scalloped forms are typical of Spanish regional craftsmanship of the period.
The original forward-facing shepherd’s hook fittings remain intact—a rare survival that enhances their authenticity. The earrings measure 8.5 cm in length and 2 cm across at their widest point, with a combined weight of 34 grams.
In very good condition for their age, these striking earrings offer a glimpse into the aesthetics and practicalities of jewellery in 18th century Spain. A bold and highly wearable example of historical fashion, and a wonderful collector’s piece.
