Unusual French 19th Century Gold and Carnelian Ring with Black Enamel and Diamond
This very unusual yet exquisitely crafted French ring dates to the 19th century. Unusual in form, the large oval carnelian gemstone disk is set with an ornately engraved gold central panel which contains a rose cut diamond in a rubover cut down silver setting with a black enamel surround. The tapering shank is constructed from five distinguished bands (one of which has a fine crack; does not affect wear). This is a fine example of high level regency period craftsmanship.
The central rose cut diamond is also foil-backed, an early method of gem setting which adds brilliance and the illusion of greater depth. The triangular facets of rose cuts were very popular during the Georgian period as they glistened more beautifully in candlelight than any other cut. The band is crafted in 18K rosy gold and tapers towards the back.
UK size N 1/2, US size 6 3/4, 9.31g, tests as 18K gold.
