An exceptional and unusual antique Masonic signet ring, crafted in 18K gold and decorated with robin’s egg blue enamel. The octagonal bezel displays the famed square-and-compass motif surrounding the letter “G,” entwined with foliate ornament - an intricately symbolic design executed with champlevé-style enamelling. The “G” at the centre of Masonic iconography has long been the subject of speculation. To some, it stands for God - the “Great Architect of the Universe.” To others, it represents Geometry - “the noblest of sciences,” the foundation of all Masonic teaching. The surrounding emblems, including the square and compass, reflect moral discipline, order, and divine proportion - central tenets of Freemasonry since its emergence from medieval stonemasons’ guilds in the 14th century. The form of the ring draws inspiration from late 18th-century French examples, when octagonal bezels of this shape and scale were fashionable. However, this particular ring dates to around 1900 and was made in conscious revival of that earlier Georgian style. The clue lies in the flat, rather than curved, bezel, and the open-backed construction - details more in keeping with turn-of-the-century craftsmanship.Stamped with the French eagle head hallmark for 18K gold, the ring has substantial weight and presence, with crisp detail to the enamel and only light wear from age.Material: 18K gold with turquoise-blue enamelHallmark: French eagle head for 18K goldWeight: 10.47gDimensions: Bezel 25 × 15 mmRing size: UK O / US 7Condition: Very good overall; enamel in excellent condition with minor age wear onlyAn extraordinary piece blending symbolism, secrecy, and artistry - a Masonic ring that bridges centuries of craftsmanship and meaning.
