    • This rare and cleverly crafted Masonic orb pendant, also known as a Masonic ball or cross, dates from circa 1910. Manufactured by Spencer & Co. of Great Queen Street, London, it is hallmarked "R.S.," representing the company's founder, Richard Spencer (active 1895–1938).

The pendant is made of a 9ct gold exterior with a silver interior. Its unique design features a spherical form held together by four trefoil-shaped arms. Once opened, the orb unfolds into a cross with six intricately engraved pyramidal segments, each adorned with symbolic Masonic engravings.

The Symbolic Engravings Include the Square and Compass (representing morality and virtue), the Skull and Crossbones (a reminder of mortality and the brevity of life), and the Eye of Providence (symbolising divine watchfulness), among many other masonic motifs.

Weighing 10.09 grams, the orb has a diameter of 16mm and bears a 9ct hallmark on the sphere itself. This example showcases its original, intricate hinges, distinguishing it from modern reproductions, which lack separate opening mechanisms.

The Masonic Orb originated in England during the 17th century, inspired by the armillary sphere, a celestial mapping tool. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, these orbs were not only ornamental accessories worn as watch fobs or pendants but also a discreet way for Freemasons to identify one another. Its spherical design is said to represent the universe, while the unfolding cross emphasises the transformative journey of moral and spiritual enlightenment within Freemasonry.

This exquisite example remains in good condition, a fine testament to the craftsmanship of Spencer & Co. and the enduring symbolism of Freemasonry.
