    • A Baroque gold pendant of about 1660-1680, set with emeralds, rubies and seed pearls, hanging from a ribbon bow.

The oval cluster has an emerald at its centre, framed by four smaller table cut emeralds and cabochon rubies, with eight drilled seed pearls hanging below on gold pins. The chased, enamelled bow above holds another table cut emerald. On the back is a painted enamel pink rosette within black scrolls, typical of the mid to late 17th century.

The bow reflects the 'mania for ribbon' that swept European dress in 1660-1680, spread through ornament prints by Gilles Légaré. Comparable pendants are in the State Historical Museum, Moscow, and the V&A (see final photos).

A rare survival of 17th-century jewellery.

Details: c.1660-1680; Central Europe; tests as 21K gold, later 9K gold chain with barrel clasp; emeralds, ruby cabochons, seed pearls, enamel; pendant 4cm x 1.5cm; chain 66cm; 12.3g.

Condition: Excellent for its age. Minor enamel losses, and a small chip to the central emerald that does not affect its stability.
