    • A late 18th-century French gold ring set with a painted enamel miniature of a shepherd boy holding a crook.

The pastoral scene probably shows David the shepherd boy, who became a hero by killing Goliath and was later chosen by God as King of Israel.

Enamel miniature painting had been practised in France since the 16th century, with Limoges its centre. A gold or copper plate was coated with a white base, then each colour of glass and metal oxide was fired separately, at its own temperature. Every firing risked cracking or bubbling, so the work demanded great precision.

A small, painterly ring with a biblical story, light enough for everyday wear.

Details: late 18th century; France; unmarked, tests as 14K gold; enamel miniature 20mm x 15mm; UK Q, US 8; 3.65g.
