    • A striking and weighty Italian necklace from the 1960s, composed of twelve carved gemstone figa amulets mounted in 18k gold and set around a substantial and long anchor-link chain. The necklace bears the Italian 750 assay mark for 18k gold and weighs an impressive 66.76 grams.

The chain measures 70 cm (27.5 in.) in length and suspends twelve individually hand-carved figural charms, each approximately 3.5 x 1 cm, depicting the mano figa — the clenched hand gesture with the thumb thrust between the index and middle finger. The charms are crafted from a variety of richly hued hardstones and gems including coral, rhodonite, rose quartz, lapis lazuli, agate, carnelian, nephrite, and tiger’s eye, each capped in 18k gold. A safety chain is fitted for security.

The mano figa has been worn since antiquity as a protective amulet against the evil eye, with origins in Etruscan Italy. The gesture symbolised fertility, strength, and defiance against misfortune, and has persisted across Mediterranean and South American cultures as a powerful talisman. The present necklace, with its full complement of twelve gem-set figa charms, represents a remarkable example of a mid-20th century collector’s piece of protective jewellery.

      Details:
      • Italy, c.1960s
      • 18k gold, marked 750
