    • A wonderfully unusual vintage 18K gold insect pendant, probably Italian and dating to around the 1980s, designed in the archaeological Etruscan Revival taste.

Modelled as a pair of stylised bees or wasps, the pendant draws directly on ancient Etruscan design and goldwork, particularly the use of granulation: tiny applied spheres of gold used to create texture and definition. Granulation was one of the most technically celebrated decorative methods of Etruscan jewellery and became an important source of inspiration for later archaeological-revival jewellers.

Here the insects are constructed with broad outstretched wings, a textured granulated body and three articulated circular drops below, giving the piece movement when worn. The small scale makes it particularly easy to wear while retaining a very distinctive silhouette.

Stamped 750 for 18K gold and additionally bearing the French owl import mark, showing that it was subsequently brought into France.

      Details: c.1980 · Probably Italy · 18K gold · 2.23g · 2.5 × 2cm · 750 mark · French owl import mark · Excellent vintage condition
