Their name comes from their resemblance to the heavy, mechanical forms of military tanks, with stepped sides, rounded edges and a deliberately substantial feel. While the best-known examples are often made in thick 18K yellow or rose gold, silver versions were also produced during the Second World War, when precious metals like gold were tightly controlled - and platinum was reserved entirely for military use.This example is set across the front with five rectangular-cut blue sapphires, most likely flame-fusion synthetic sapphires, which is very typical for the period. In the 1940s, synthetic sapphires were widely used in French jewellery, particularly when natural stones were less readily available due to the war.The ring is made in French silver and bears the crab hallmark, indicating French silver, along with a maker’s lozenge. The sapphires measure approximately 5 × 3 × 2mm each.
