    • A pair of early 19th-century chandelier earrings, possibly Peranakan, set throughout with 244 rose cut diamonds.

Each earring holds 122 rose cut diamonds in closed-back gold settings, approximately 4ct in all. The openwork chandeliers are richly foliate, with flower heads and bunches of grapes, and are articulated so they move gently when worn, flickering as rose cuts were meant to do by candlelight. Their length reflects early 19th-century fashion, when upswept hair and lower necklines left room for dramatic earrings.

The fittings and top sections were added later by the French firm Mécan and carry the French eagle's head mark for 18K gold; the lower sections test as approximately 8-9K gold. The added diamonds were chosen to match the earlier work in colour, cut and setting, and the closures are secure and modern.

Substantial, wearable and full of movement.

Details: early 19th century, later fittings by Mécan; possibly Peranakan; gold, lower sections test approx. 8-9K, later fittings 18K with eagle's head mark; 244 rose cut diamonds, approx. 4ct in total; approx. 7cm long, 2.3cm wide; 22.34g the pair.

Condition: Excellent overall and all stones secure. One small diamond is missing from one grape-bunch motif, not immediately noticeable when worn.
