    • This exceptional Victorian faience scarab ring, dating from around 1870, is a captivating example of the Egyptian Revival style that swept through 19th-century Europe. Inspired by ancient Egyptian scarab amulets, this piece reflects the era’s fascination with archaeological discoveries, particularly those of Egypt’s tombs and temples.

At its centre is a hand-carved faience scarab, measuring 14mm x 9mm, with a distinctive faded turquoise glaze, typical of antique Egyptian faience. The scarab is mounted in a solid 21K gold swivel bezel, allowing it to rotate fully. The reverse of the scarab is meticulously engraved with hieroglyphs.

The gold shoulders are adorned with finely coiled gold wire, a design feature that pays homage to ancient Egyptian jewellery styles. While many authentic ancient Egyptian faience scarabs were collected and repurposed into jewellery during the 18th and 19th centuries, the surge in demand during the late 19th century also led to the creation of newly made scarabs in the ancient style. As such, it is difficult to determine whether the scarab in this ring is an ancient artefact repurposed for Victorian use or a carefully crafted contemporary piece of the period.

Scarab beetles were among the most potent symbols in ancient Egypt, representing immortality, resurrection, transformation, and protection. These amulets were believed to offer spiritual guidance and were often placed with the deceased for safe passage to the afterlife.

This ring is a UK size O (US size 7) and weighs a total of 5.23 grams.

Condition: Excellent, with all original details intact and the swivel mechanism functioning perfectly.

A rare and symbolic piece of Victorian Egyptian Revival jewellery, seamlessly blending ancient symbolism with 19th-century artistry.
