A beautifully made antique French brooch dating to around 1880, designed as a floral spray within a circular border of diamonds. Crafted in 18K gold, it is set with three antique cushion-cut rubies and 65 rose-cut diamonds, creating a lively contrast between the rich red stones and the bright shimmer of the diamonds. The rubies weigh approximately 2.5 carats in total and are particularly attractive for their vivid, well-matched red colour and particularly good clarity. The diamonds are set in silver-topped settings to the front, a typical 19th century technique used to enhance their brightness, while the rubies are held in gold claws. The stones are all open-backed, allowing the light through beautifully. At 3cm in diameter, this is an ideal size for a brooch: large enough to make a statement, but still easy to wear. It weighs 7.85 grams and bears a French eagle head hallmark for 18K gold, and indicating it was made in Paris, with a faded maker’s mark.A highly decorative and elegant late 19th century brooch, with strong workmanship, beautifully balanced design, and excellent overall condition.
