A stunning antique French ‘star sapphire’ ring made in Paris, circa 1940. The ring is crafted in 18K yellow gold and features a 3ct star sapphire cabochon.

The milky blue sapphire displays ‘asterism’, which is a rare optical phenomenon that occurs when light hitting the surface of a cabochon gemstone reflects off parallel sets of fibrous inclusions, in turn causing a star-shaped reflection. This particular star sapphire displays a six-ray star with excellent clarity. For optimum viewing effect, it is best viewed in sunlight or from a single source of light.

The rare gemstone is set in an open-backed smooth yellow gold signet mount. The gold ring is stamped with a French ‘eagle head’ control mark which indicates that it was made in 18K gold in Paris.

The ring weighs 6.37 grams, the ring face measures 11mm north to south at the front, and tapers down to 2mm across at the back of the ring. It is in great condition and looks mesmerising when worn on a bright, sunny day.
