This fantastic antique Edwardian era snake ring dates to around 1900-1910, and would have been made in Germany.  

The ring is crafted in 18K gold and the central tablet is set with two horizontal rows of blue sapphires, with three flush set white sapphires in the gaps between, mimicking stars amongst the night sky.

The shoulders and band is crafted from two intertwining serpents, each with a sapphire on the top of the head. Snake jewellery, with its sinuous beauty and timeless mystique, has been a symbol of fascination and intrigue for centuries. However the snake motif had a strong resurgence in Victorian and Edwardian jewellery ever since Prince Albert bought Queen Victoria a snake engagement ring with an emerald (her birthstone) embedded into it. The Victorians associated the snake motif with eternal love and it has been a popular ever since.

The ring weighs 2.26 grams and is stamped with a hallmarked for 18K, stones tested as sapphires. 

The Edwardian era of jewellery, named after King Edward VII, spanned from 1901 to 1910, although stylistically it is often extended through to 1914. Edwardian jewellery was characterised by a move away from the large and ostentatious jewellery pieces of the Victorian era towards smaller and more refined pieces. Delicate and feminine designs were popular, featuring lace-like filigree work and floral motifs. Platinum became increasingly popular as a metal of choice and the use of colour in jewellery decreased, with the focus on the brilliance of diamonds and the elegance of pearls. Conditions: Buyers are responsible for return shipping costs. All items are to be returned in their original condition and packaging. Buyer damaged items and items bought on layaway are ineligible for returns. Items over £2500 can be returned for store credit only.
