An unusual and beautifully preserved antique French citrine intaglio pendant necklace, crafted in 18K gold and dating to around 1880. The pendant is carved with an intricately detailed profile of a Roman god or centurion; likely Mars, the Roman god of war - wearing a crested helmet and ornate armour. The image is reverse-engraved into a thick plaque of pale yellow citrine, using a technique where the design is etched into the back of the gemstone to be viewed through its polished surface - a style known as "intaglio à fond."The pendant is set in a clean rectangular gold frame and suspended from a later 18K gold chain measuring 19 inches. The pendant itself bears the French eagle’s head hallmark, used in Paris between 1838–1919, confirming the gold purity as 18K.The citrine measures 28mm x 21mm, offering a substantial and elegant presence on the neckline. The combined necklace weighs 11g.Date: c.1880Origin: Paris, FranceMaterial: Citrine quartz, 18K yellow goldPendant Size: 28mm x 21mmChain Length: 19 inchesWeight: 11g totalMarks: Eagle’s head hallmark (Paris), tests as 18K goldCondition: Excellent antique condition — engraving remains crisp, gold setting well preserved.
