    • A Georgian gold ring of about 1820, set with a much older cameo carved in the late 16th or early 17th century.

The tiny cameo shows a finely carved profile. It sits in a scalloped, enamelled bezel in the style of 17th-century rings, as though the goldsmith chose to honour the age of the stone. One side of the bezel deliberately overhangs, as the enamelling shows.

The shoulders are worked in repoussé (raised from behind) with acanthus leaves, leading to a fluted shank typical of the early 19th century. The ring came in a box from Parkes & Co. of 12 Vigo Street, Regent Street, a London firm of jewellers and silversmiths established in 1777, so it was probably sold through them.

It is unmarked but tests as 14K gold, which may point to German or Dutch manufacture. Two periods of craftsmanship in one small ring.

Details: ring c.1820, cameo late 16th to early 17th century; possibly German or Dutch; unmarked, tests as 14K gold; cameo 6mm x 5mm; bezel 7mm x 9mm, standing 4mm; UK N, US 6¾.

Condition: Excellent, with the enamel well preserved.
