    • A vintage mid-century gold bracelet set with magnificent aquamarine, circa 1940.

The bracelet weighs an impressive 30 grams, and its crafted in solid 18K gold. The entire exterior of the bracelet is intricately engraved with scrollwork and foliate motifs.

The natural aquamarine gemstone weighs approximately 8cts and displays the most gorgeous watery blue colour, with very few inclusions. The aquamarine contrasts the buttery, yellow hues of the high-karat gold very beautifully. The aquamarine is bezel set in an open-backed mount which enables light to pass through the stone and allows for easy cleaning of the setting.

It measures 19.5cm in length. The bracelet remains in very good condition and the stone is securely set. The tongue of the box clip clasp is stamped with a makers mark in rectangular box (TCC). The gold is unmarked but tests as 18K.

The name 'aquamarine' comes from the Latin words 'aqua' (water) and 'marina' (of the sea). It has been used in jewellery for at least 3000 years with references in Roman, Greek, Egyptian and Sumerian writings. The Romans in particular believed the sea-blue gem washed ashore after spilling out of the mermaid's treasure chest. Blessed by the sea god Neptune, they trusted the crystals to bring fortune and protection to those who found them.
