A delicate antique French religious pendant, dating from around the 1930’s and rediscovered among a small cache of long-forgotten French jeweller’s stock. The pendant is made in 18K yellow gold and centres on an oval mother of pearl plaque, carved in low relief with a veiled profile of the Virgin Mary, most likely intended as Our Lady of Lourdes. The devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes became one of the most important Marian cults in France after the reported apparitions at Lourdes in 1858. By the early 20th century, medals and devotional pendants of this kind were widely worn as personal expressions of faith, protection and pilgrimage. This example has a distinctly Art Deco outline, with a tapering geometric frame softened by small floral details, including rose-like motifs above and below the central medallion. The use of mother of pearl gives the Virgin’s profile a soft, silvery luminosity, contrasting neatly with the warm yellow gold frame. The pendant bears a French eagle head hallmark, indicating 18K gold, along with a maker’s mark. It measures approximately 24 × 18mm and weighs 1.59g. It is in excellent condition, with crisp detail to the gold frame and good preservation to the mother of pearl centre.A refined French Art Deco religious pendant, combining Marian devotion, old jeweller’s stock condition and elegant 1930s design. Please note, the chain shown is not included.
