A rare silver talismanic pendant of 17th century, probably Spanish, set with a faceted teardrop of agate. Its most remarkable feature is the setting. The stone is gripped by a ring of flame-like claws that rise from a braided silver border, engulfing its edges. We have not seen this design before. Comparable silver amulet pendants of this period are generally attributed to Spain. The agate is cut with unusual facets, and a small fleck of pyrite shows within it. A loop at the base probably once carried a pearl drop, which could be added again if desired.
This type of amulet was worn in the 17th century as a protective object or talisman, the combination of agate and silver being renowned for their apotropaic virtues.
It hangs on a later Italian sterling silver chain with a secure clasp. The pendant itself is also stamped with an early hallmark for silver.A bold, early jewel with a sculptural quality that reads very modern.Details: Late 17th century; probably Spain; silver; faceted agate; pendant 3.9 × 2.4 cm (excluding rings); chain 60 cm (later, Italian, 925); 11.42g.Condition: Very good despite its significant age
