A very fine and rare example of an antique Georgian masonic collar jewel.

This large, heavy gold pendant was presented to Brother Henry Lewis Robins, who was presiding as ‘Worshipful Master’ of the St. Albans Lodge in London during the year 1821.

He was awarded this beautifully enamelled gold jewel from the Officers and Brethren of the Lodge (St .Albans No. 29, which was No. 35 in 1821) for going above and beyond his duties when performing as ‘Worshipful Master’. In Freemasonry, this position can be likened to the role a CEO of a company, essentially in charge of the smooth running of the lodge.

The front of this 18K gold jewel features many masonic motifs including a radiant sun, the all seeing eye and the square and compasses placed above a blue guilloché enamel plaque. It is bordered by the phrase “To Br (Brother) Henry Lewis Robins” in Old English gothic font. The edge of the hollow gold pendant displays a gorgeous repoussé scrollwork with floral motifs which continues on the original split ring.

The reverse of the collar jewel is beautifully engraved with the following:

“The officers and brethren of the St Albans Lodge n.35. In remembrance of the uniform kindness experienced by them & in

grateful recollection of the unwearied attention to the interest of the Lodge evinced by Br Robins while presiding as Worshipful Master have presented this Jewel as a tribute of Friendship which they trust will be as lasting as it is sincere. A:L. 5821 - A:D. 1821”.

These Masonic collar jewels signify the rank and position of the wearer within the Masonic hierarchy, and this one undoubtedly would have made a clear statement of authority in the Lodge. The use of Masonic officer collar jewels is steeped in tradition and is an important aspect of Masonic culture. They serve as a symbol of the wearer's dedication to the principles and values of the Masonic order, as well as their commitment to serving their community and fellow members.

The pendant weighs a hefty 36.81 grams. It is unmarked but tests as 18K gold.

Despite being over 200 years old, the jewel remains in excellent condition. There is some light surface wear to the blue enamel (dots and an edge chip) commensurate with age, whilst remarkably there are virtually no dents or damages to the gold itself.

The collar jewel measures 6cm x 5cm, and the split ring adds another 1.7cm.
