An unusual antique gold ring from Java, probably 19th century and possibly earlier. The ring is built around a small hexagonal plaque, engraved with two half-circles, one facing up and one down, divided by a horizontal line. On either side, stepped shoulders with vertical ridges swell into rounded forms. Those shoulders closely echo the ancient gold rings of East Java from the 10th to 12th centuries. The construction, however, suggests a later date, and the gold tests as 18K, lower than the high-purity gold of ancient examples. It is best understood as a later Javanese ring made in the old tradition.A compact, sculptural ring that wears well every day.Details: Probably 19th century; Java; gold testing 18K; hexagon 0.9 cm, front 2 cm wide × 0.8 cm tall; 6.00g; UK O, US 7¾.Condition: Very good.
