    • A fine antique Russian gold egg pendant, late 19th century, circa 1890, most likely made in St Petersburg.

The egg is formed in rich 14K gold with a finely cast ‘samorodok’ or gold nugget surface, a distinctive textured finish associated with high quality Russian goldwork of the period. Set to the front is a faceted sapphire, providing a restrained but striking point of colour against the warm gold.

The hallmarks are sadly worn, however traces of the Russian 583 standard for 14K gold are still visible, along with a partially legible city mark consistent with St Petersburg. The maker’s mark has faded, meaning it cannot be definitively attributed to Fabergé, although closely comparable gold eggs by Fabergé have appeared at Sotheby’s, including The Russian Sale 2006 lot 390 and Gold Boxes, Fabergé and Objects of Vertu, 2022 lot 136.

The pendant tests as 14K gold throughout.

      Weight 1.22 grams.

      Measures approximately 1.7 x 1cm.

A rare and highly collectible piece of late Imperial Russian jewellery, made in the tradition of the great St Petersburg workshops and closely aligned with the Fabergé aesthetic, while remaining honestly described.
