    • A Moroccan gold ring of 1912, commemorating events at Taza in the year France established its protectorate over Morocco.

The Treaty of Fes, signed that year, led to Morocco being divided into zones controlled by France and Spain. Taza, a strategic city between the Rif and the Middle Atlas, controlled the route between northern and central Morocco, and saw skirmishes, manoeuvres and negotiations as French forces met resistance from local tribes.

Made in Morocco in openwork and engraved gold, the ring carries the crescent moon and the Hand of Fatima, a symbol of protection. It was probably made as a keepsake for a French soldier or officer posted at Taza; the engraving in the Latin rather than the Arabic alphabet points that way, though it might equally have honoured the Moroccan resistance.

Worn smooth and silky by years of wear: a small ring with a big story.

Details: 1912; Morocco; unmarked, tests as 18K gold; front 11mm north to south, 2mm at the back; UK N, US 6¾; 2.35g.

Condition: Softly worn from many years of use. Please ask for a detailed condition report.
