    • An etched carnelian bead from the ancient Indus Valley, mid-3rd millennium BC, set in a later 22K gold ring.

The conical orange carnelian is decorated with white geometric patterns, made by alkaline bleaching by the Harappans of the Indus Valley civilisation (modern Pakistan and India). Beads like this have been found at major Indus sites and are held in collections such as the Louvre and the British Museum. They also travelled far along early trade routes, reaching Mesopotamia, Egypt and Greece.

The bead is set in a later high-karat gold mount, likely made in the 18th or 19th century in imitation of ancient styles. The hollow hoop is round in section, widens towards the bezel and feels silky on the finger.

A very small ring, for a little finger or a slender hand, carrying over four thousand years of history.

Details: bead mid-3rd millennium BC, mount likely 18th or 19th century; French hallmarks, tests as 22K gold; carnelian 10mm x 10mm x 5mm; UK E, US 2¼ (very small); 10g.
