A Neoclassical glass intaglio pendant of about 1810-1815, after Giovanni Beltrami's engraving of 'The Communion of Atala'.The scene copies Pierre-Jérôme Lordon's painting of 1808, now in the Louvre, inspired by Chateaubriand's novel Atala (1801). Atala, a Christian Native American woman bound by her mother's vow of chastity, has taken poison rather than break it; she receives communion from Father Aubry as her lover Chactas grieves.The painting belonged to Count Sommariva, one of the great collectors of the Napoleonic era, who had his masterpieces reproduced in enamel miniatures and commissioned Beltrami to engrave intaglios after them. Glass (pâte de verre) impressions such as this one were made to share the designs with collectors. The mottled red glass imitates agate.It is mounted in an 18K gold frame bearing the crossed keys and umbrella mark of the Papal States.Details: c.1810-1815; 18K gold frame (tests as 18K), crossed keys mark; red glass impression; 32mm x 25mm; 4.76g.Condition: Excellent, with light wear consistent with age.
