    • A heavy vintage Islamic silver signet ring with an excellent yellow-orange agate intaglio dating to the second half of the 20th century.

The ring is crafted in solid .840 silver and carries hallmarks for Tehran. The agate stone with bevelled edges is adorned with masterly engraved cursive Nasta’līq calligraphy. The stone is set in a silver oval signet mount with grooves and ridges, some of which are decorated with circles within.

Islamic agate stone rings, also known as an aqueeq ring or aqiq/akik ring, are of religious significance as the prophet Muhammad wore one set in silver on his right hand. To this day, many Muslims do the same as it is considered ‘sunnah’ to do so, including both Shia and Sunni clergy. This orange agate specimen was most likely mined in Yemen, the country has been known since ancient times for its agate and incense trade. First recordings of Yemeni agate arriving in Europe date back to 384-322 BC in Aristotle’s writings.

UK ring size S / US size 9.5, 21.89g (heavy!)
