    • A Spanish 'lazo' pendant made in Cordoba around 1730: a devotional chest jewel in high-carat gold set with 28 diamonds.

Lazos were popular throughout 18th-century Spain. This one has two sections, a crowned top and a cross with a central rosette below, worked in openwork gold with chasing, filigree and granulation. A third, bow-shaped top section is now missing, so it survives as two parts of a three-part jewel.

The table and rose cut diamonds sit in closed, foil-backed settings; the foil has aged to gunpowder grey, but the stones still sparkle. The pendant carries several rampant lion marks for Cordoba. A near-identical two-tier lazo sold at Christie's in 2011, and a pair of three-tier lazos is in the V&A (see final photo).

A beautiful piece of early Spanish Rococo goldsmithing.

Details: c.1730; Cordoba, Spain; high-carat gold, Cordoba lion marks; 28 table and rose cut diamonds; 6.5cm x 3cm; 9.67g.

Condition: Good, with age-related surface wear and patina to the gold. The diamonds are secure.
