A rare survivor from Indonesia’s Early Classical period; this ancient gold ring was crafted in Java between the 8th and 10th centuries. During this period, the island of Java was a major cultural and political centre of Southeast Asia.Formed in high-karat gold, approximately 22K, the ring is centred with a raised circular bezel engraved with an unusual abstract motif. Javanese rings of this period are most commonly decorated with lotus forms or the stylised Sri motif; an abstract emblem associated with Dewi Sri, the rice goddess, symbolising fertility, prosperity, and protection. While this design could represent a highly stylised Sri motif, its forked calligraphic character also suggests a possible early Nagari script inscription.
