A refined antique French book chain necklace, made in solid 18K gold and dating to the 19th century, circa 1880. This is a classic “book” link construction; each rectangular link is flat, articulated, and designed to lie smoothly against the skin, giving that crisp, tailored look these chains are prized for. On the neck it sits very well at the collar bone; elegant and understated, with a lovely, even drape.Off the neck it can feel a touch fiddly to handle, simply because the links are so flat and responsive; once worn, though, it settles beautifully and looks superb. The necklace fastens with a traditional box clasp which closes cleanly and feels secure in use. There is evidence of a past repair to a link near the clasp; this is consistent with age and wear, and does not detract from the overall appearance when worn.The gold bears the French owl control mark, indicating 18K fineness. A maker’s mark is also present; read as “AC” with an arrow motif. Overall condition is very good; the chain remains wearable, with the clasp functioning correctly and the links presenting neatly.Length 47 cm / 18.5 in; weight 9.86 g.
