A Seljuk silver seal ring of the 12th century, set with a carnelian engraved in Kufic script. The Seljuks, a Central Asian dynasty of Turkish origin, ruled much of the Islamic world in the 11th to 13th centuries. The rectangular carnelian is engraved in angular Kufic script, an early Arabic style dated to the 9th-12th centuries (Porter, 2011), with the flat back and bevelled edges typical of Islamic seals. The silver mount is chased and inlaid with niello (a black metal alloy) in arabesque patterns, with a rare surviving niello lattice under the bezel. Four short prongs hold the stone, and a small knob at the base is a classic Seljuk feature. A close parallel is item 27 in the Benjamin Zucker Collection (1987).Over 850 years old and still comfortable to wear.Details: 12th century; Seljuk; silver with niello; carnelian intaglio; bezel 16mm x 12mm; UK L½, US 6; 5.45g.Condition: A repair to one corner, and the band is slightly distorted but comfortable to wear. The carnelian is in very good condition; what looks like scratching is wax residue from historic sealing, which can be removed.
