    • A tiny ancient Roman gold ring of about the 1st century BC, set with a banded agate intaglio of a bearded man.

An intaglio is a stone engraved in reverse, used as a seal. This one shows a bearded male figure, possibly a philosopher or a god, cut deeply into banded agate; a white streak crosses the stone. The ring follows the Hellenistic tradition but is typical of the 1st century BC, made in high-carat gold with a hollow hoop and a truncated bezel.

Its small size suggests it was made for a child or a young woman. Close parallels are in the V&A (8781-1863), the British Museum (1872,0604.182), the Met (1995.85.2 and 74.51.4244) and the Alice and Louis Koch Collection (134 and 142); see the final image.

A delicate survival from the ancient world.

Details: c.1st century BC; Roman; tests as approx. 23K gold; banded agate intaglio 10mm x 7mm; bezel stands 6mm; internal diameter 14mm x 13mm, UK C½, US 1; 2.63g.

      Condition: Remarkably well preserved.
