Rare Antique Silver South Germany Signet Ring
This unusual signet ring dates to circa 1750 and originates from ‘Schwäbisch Gmünd’, a small town in southern Germany which has produced silver objects and jewellery since the 14th century
It is decorated with diagonal bands of dots around the shank, a unique characteristic of rings made in the region during the late 18th century (source: V&A museum collection - accession no. 188-1870). The dotted band bifurcates towards the bezel and features applied silver ‘gmünderblum’ (stylised flowers typical of Schwäbisch Gmünd jewellery) on the shoulders which point towards a flat octagonal bezel which has somewhat surprisingly not yet been engraved!
18th century German ‘lot’ silver hallmark on underside of bezel
UK size R 1/2, US size 9, weight: 6.93g
