French 19th Century Hardstone Cameo Ring

    • This unusual antique cameo ring was made in France, circa 1900. A layered hardstone agate is finely carved from one piece to give this magnificent bi-colour effect. It depicts the bust of Hellenistic Greek warrior ‘Ajax the Great’. Ajax was a Greek hero of immense courage and strength who played a pivotal role in the myth of the Trojan war. He was trained by the Centaur Chiron, alongside Achilles, another great hero in mythology. The ring is crafted in 18K gold and in excellent condition considering its age.

      UK size Q 1/2, US size 8.25, 8.16g 18K gold, band measures 6mm wide, bezel measures 24mm x 18mm

      French makers lozenge mark present, probably Benjamin Rousseau (c.1899) or B. Roux (c.1899)

      French ‘Tête de chevale’ control mark in oval shape indicates 18K gold made between 1838 and 1919 (Source: World Hallmarks - Vol I by Hallmark Research Institute)
