Antique French 18K Gold and Silver Engraved Intaglio Ring
A superb, French antique intaglio ring dating to the early 19th century. The oval bezel is set with a silver plaque which has been masterly engraved. It appears to depict the great French political philosopher of the Enlightment, Montesquieu (Charles Louis de Secondat, Baron de La Brède and Montesquieu). He was best known for ‘The Spirit of Laws’ (1748), one of the most renowned works in the history of political theory and of jurisprudence.
The level of detail in the engraving is particularly impressive, with a fantastic juxtaposition between the softness of the facial features and the clarity of the curls of the hair.
The silver plaque is set in a grooved oval bezel which adjoins to a plain flat band.
Antique French hallmark indicates .750 gold (18K)
UK size Q 1/4, US size 8
